Hotel Glacier

Boutique Hotel & Restaurant

Built in 1864, Hotel Glacier is one of the oldest hotels in the region with a fascinating history. A glacier known as Unterergletscher stretched down into the valley just in front of the hotel, and was a major feature of the area as well as a source of ice harvested for refrigeration and shipped as far away as Paris. Today Hotel Glacier is a stylishly designed boutique hotel celebrating its origins plus an impressive restaurant offering creative local and seasonal dishes with a view of the Eiger North Face. Their alpine trout was a highlight of the trip.

TRAVEL TIPS

  • If planning to hike to Lake Bachalpsee, visit in the summer to be sure the snow will have melted and the trail is clear from avalanches
  • Temperatures at the top of mountains can vary widely from the base, so be sure to dress with an extra layer for warmth
  • The area around Lausanne is home to numerous vineyards and excellent wineries
  • Visit the Ouchy lake district in Lausanne for a nice stroll along the waterside promenade past parks and stately buildings
  • Lausanne Cathedral was built in the 12th century and is a Gothic monument worth seeing when in the city
  • If returning a rental car from France at the Geneva airport, be sure to enter on the French side of the airport rather than the Swiss to avoid expensive fees
