Grindelwald, Switzerland

Scooters in the Alps

I’m learning how important it is to play. For adults to feel like children for a minute, be curious, and let ourselves experience joy. You have to give yourself permission. Especially if you’re one of those conscientious, responsible types who tend to feel guilty about enjoying anything too much. But let’s just all stop doing that. We’re made to soak in the bizarre and precious world around us. It’s like fuel and can help us take on real life with more energy and clarity. Plus, it’s a lot more fun.

In Grindelwald, I did feel a little bit like the kid version of myself. I stood at the top of a mountain and felt that fluttery stomach thing I get when I go too high. I swung on a swing. I got so close to a cute Swiss cow that I was electrocuted by the fence. The last time I touched an electric fence I was probably barefoot and missing a couple teeth.

Then I rode down the alps on some kind of crazy scooter thing, wearing a ridiculous helmet and getting rained on. I listened to the cow bells like it was the purest, most magical sound, and I looked—like really looked—at little dollhouses dotting the slopes of a velvety green valley. I dunked bite-sized cubes of bread in a pot of melted cheese for lunch. And then I took a nap like my two-year old.

So basically, stop being so serious. Do yourself a favor, and play a little bit more. Remember the things you used to love and lay awake thinking about when you were little, and how much bigger and more exciting the world looked back then? We’re the ones who have changed.
